New Directors Workshop 4: Essential Knowledge (Part Two) @ Ohio Library Council

This is a hybrid event. Participants can attend in person at the OLC office in Dublin (Northwest Columbus) or online with the same access to workshop content. You can attend the entire series or choose the workshop(s) you would like to attend.

Overview:
The transition to a new management role can be challenging even for experienced and highly-skilled employees. The OLC’s New Directors Workshop Series is created specifically for new and aspiring library directors who want to develop their management skills, confidence and effectiveness. This comprehensive leadership training will cover proven techniques and powerful strategies for success in your new role. The program will be delivered through four workshops; each focusing on a specific area of education. You can attend the entire series or choose the workshop(s) you would like to attend.

Who Should Attend: Library directors with less than three years of experience as a director, interim or acting directors, or library staff with management and/or administrative experience who aspire to become a library director.

What’s Included: Morning coffee, light refreshments and lunch will be provided for those who attend at the OLC office. All handouts, provided by presenters, will be available online through the OLC app. Print them prior to the conference, view them from your personal device during the event or view/download them after the event. Workshop recordings and handouts will be available online for 30 days following the program. Attendees will receive a free digital copy of the OLC publication, Ohio Public Library Administrator’s Handbook.

Continuing Education Credits: For those working toward their Ohio Public Librarian or Ohio Public Library Staff re-certification, this workshop series counts as 20 hours (5 hours per workshop).

Program Overview:
This workshop is primarily designed for new public library fiscal officers, deputy fiscal officers, and directors, but it can also serve as a valuable refresher. You will gain a better understanding of the main duties of a public library fiscal officer and get the latest information on fund accounting, budgeting, reporting, OPERS, library funding and key legislative issues impacting public libraries. This is an opportunity to learn from and share ideas with other public library fiscal officers from around the state.

Intended Audience: New public library fiscal officers, deputy fiscal officers, directors, or anyone who would like an overview of the functions performed by public library fiscal officers.

The Planning Committee is seeking one-hour programs that focus on administration, middle management, and anyone seeking success as a leader. All program submissions will be considered, with priority given to those that feature human resources, imposter syndrome, difficult conversations, transitioning to leadership, change, meeting vs. email, effective feedback, MLIS requirements, and work/life balance.

OLC Planning & Leadership Conference @ Columbus Metropolitan Library

This event is by invitation only.

Invitations will be sent via email in the fall of 2024 to all current and incoming Committee and Division Action Council members.


Volunteer leaders are essential to OLC’s success. The work accomplished this fall will help guide the organization through 2025 and prepare us to address the challenges ahead. This is an opportunity to meet in person, determine goals for Committees and Divisions, and plan for 2025.

While outgoing Committee and Division Action Council members will be finishing their terms, we encourage them to attend this event to share their experience and practical insight with those about to take office.
