Workshop Series for New and Aspiring Directors
The transition to a new management role can be challenging even for experienced and highly-skilled employees. The OLC’s New Directors Workshop Series is created specifically for new and aspiring library directors who want to develop their management skills, confidence and effectiveness. This comprehensive leadership training will cover proven techniques and powerful strategies for success in your new role. The program will be delivered through four workshops; each focusing on a specific area of education. You can attend the entire series, or choose the workshop(s) you would like to attend.

Workshop Overview:

Is your library considering going on the local ballot with a new levy, renewing an existing levy, or possibly modifying a levy that’s been in place for some time? This  program will provide the information you need as you prepare for your ballot initiative, including:

  • the latest levy FAQ from the Auditor of State’s Office
  • determining the need and public support for your library levy;
  • legal process for placing the issue on the ballot;
  • developing the campaign message;
  • running the mechanics of a library campaign;
  • connecting with the media and developing message strategies; and
  • coordinating a lawful campaign

The format of this workshop will address each of these six points and allow time to answer questions.

Intended Audience: Directors, trustees, public relations staff, and other staff who will be involved in the library’s levy education effort.

We know that libraries are safe spaces that welcome all people. Places that can be particularly helpful for refugees and new Americans to come for resources and support. Public libraries are at a unique advantage to reach underserved adult ESL learners. It’s already happening. Libraries are hosting ESL conversation groups, citizenship classes, and language tutoring. But how do we best increase our effectiveness and reach? In this session, we will discuss how partnering with local non-profit organizations and schools will help your library provide responsive and meaningful outreach and programming to immigrants and refugees. Join us to learn more about the different ways libraries can adapt to fulfill the growing needs of English language learners in our Ohio public library systems.

2:15 p.m. | Strategies for Self-Care and Avoiding Burnout

The line between stress and burnout is a blurred one, and it’s often difficult to see where one ends and the other begins. This interactive session will discuss the difference between stress versus burnout and ongoing change in the workplace, compassion fatigue and what we can do about it. We will identify practical coping skills that can benefit you both professionally and personally. Audience participation is encouraged as we will borrow strength and real-life suggestions from each other.
