On May 18, 2016, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) published their final rule updating the regulations governing which executive, administrative and professional employees (white collar workers) are entitled to the Fair Labor Standards Act’s minimum wage and overtime pay protections. The final rule raises the initial salary threshold for “exempt” employees to $47,476 per year and it will be effective December 1, 2016This webinar will help you prepare for the changes and legal counsel will answer your questions.

Do you have difficulty talking about certain issues with the library staff you supervise or with patrons? Do problems go unaddressed? In this session you will learn how to start difficult conversations, how to be productive in the dialogue, and how to create accountability. You will also learn communication models and specific tools to enable you to be successful in the most difficult conversations and relationships. You will leave with action plans you can implement in difficult situations in your personal and professional life.

  • Help others take accountability for disrespectful behaviors.
  • Create a plan for improving communication with co-workers.
  • Design communication focusing on a mutual purpose.
  • Focus on positive behaviors and the need to role model these behaviors.

R. Glenn Ray PhD

Presenter: Dr. Glenn Ray has published eleven books, nine national journal articles, and almost 900 leadership newspaper columns. He is a past president of the National Speakers Association of Ohio, the Ohio Valley Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development, and the United Way of Washington County; president of Leadership Ohio; and board member of the Ohio Valley Economic Roundtable and the O’Neill Center. His practical understanding of organizational behavior comes from his experience of nine years in underground coal mines; two years in construction work; five years as training manager at Borg-Warner Chemicals, GE Plastics, and Scott Fetzer; ten years as director of the Institute of Education and Training for Business in the McDonough Center for Leadership and Business at Marietta College; and fourteen years as president of RayCom Learning. Ohio History Day 101: The Experience of History Day in Ohio Webinar

Ohio History Day is a year-long research project conducted by students in grades 6-12. A self-directed project, students are encouraged to find a topic that interests them and demonstrate its historical significance. For many students, this is their first time visiting a library or accessing an academic database with the express purpose of doing research. This program will be co-presented by Shoshanna Gross of Ohio History Day and the Ohio History Connection and Deanna McDaniel from the Genoa Middle School Library. Shoshanna will discuss the overall benefits and logistics of the program, and Deanna will talk about her experience from the perspective of a librarian with a long-standing relationship with Ohio History Day.

Learning Objectives:
• Gain a better understanding of the structure and educational goals of Ohio History Day
• Learn how to implement Ohio History Day at your library or school
• Learn some of the ways that libraries and schools are partnering around Ohio History Day

About the Presenters:
Shoshanna Gross
Trained as an arts administrator, Shoshanna has worked as a programmer, a tour manager, and an arts education advocate in New York and Columbus. In 2015, she joined the team at the Ohio History Connection as the State Coordinator for Ohio History Day. As the new administrator of this rigorous, creative, and student-directed program, Shoshanna is inspired by the participants every day.

Deanna McDaniel
A school librarian for 35 years, Deanna has taught in all levels of libraries: elementary, middle, high school and academic. Since 1998, she has directed the Genoa Middle School Media Center (Westerville City Schools) and has been a part of the History Day competition there. She was awarded the Ohio Behring Teacher Award for classroom excellence in National History Day’s Junior division in 2015, and was selected as one of 23 Behring Teacher Ambassadors for National History Day for the 2016-17 school year. She also serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Westerville Public Library. Readers can enjoy Deanna’s book: Gentle Reads: Great Books to Warm Hearts and Lift Spirits, Grades 5-9, published in 2008.

Join Children’s Services Division members from around your chapter to talk about all things related to children’s librarianship. You will have the opportunity to brainstorm new ideas and network at one of the five regional “unconferences” at the following locations:

An “unconference” is a participant-guided learning opportunity that encourages peer networking and audience participation. The unconferences will serve as an opportunity to peer teach among library colleagues, providing a forum for librarians to collaborate on creating engaging and empowering experiences for the children and parents they serve, while being a value-added opportunity designed specifically for Children’s Services Division members.

The Friends of the Library Book Warehouse in Mount Vernon, Ohio, handles more than a half a million items for sale to the public and online each summer. Learn how they manage online sales as an Amazon Direct Ship Warehouse Provider. The panel will share some of what they have learned about creating and managing a brick & mortar store in an abandoned meat processing plant and their mission to donate suitable materials to libraries, schools, and charitable organizations worldwide to get the most “bang for their buck” without overwhelming library staff or Friends volunteers.

In her current position as Borrower Services Manager at the Kent Free Library, she oversees the circulation department, the pages, and handles the majority of patron account questions, but what she enjoys most is the privilege of motivating staff to realize their potential.
