Program Overview: On July 17, 2018, the OLC and OPLIN announced a new venture with LinkedIn Learning  that will allow Ohioans free access to Lynda.com education courses with a valid Ohio library card. This webinar will explain how Lynda.com works, how to implement it at your library (full implementation will be in place by Sept. 1), and how to promote it to your patrons and the community.

Learning Objectives:
You’ll learn how to:

  1. Manage your Lynda Library account
  2. Create a landing page on your website
  3. Gain a better understanding of the patron login experience
  4. Promote the service to your patrons and the community
  5. Utilize the service in your library’s programming (coding clinics, resume building)
  6. Learn tips for marketing the service to individuals, businesses and students

Overview:
House Bill (HB) 312 was recently passed by the Ohio General Assembly and became effective on Nov. 2. The new law will impact how public libraries, schools and other local governments utilize credit cards. Even though the new law became effective on Nov. 2, changes to credit card policies are not required until February 2019. Please join the OLC and the Ohio Auditor of State’s Office (AOS) for this FREE webinar to prepare your library for the upcoming changes. The AOS will be issuing a bulletin on the new law and OLC will be sharing new sample credit card policies prior to the webinar.

Intended Audience: Library Directors, Fiscal Officers and other Library Administrators.

Overview:
Members of the 133rd Ohio General Assembly were officially sworn in on Mon., Jan. 7 and it is essential that public libraries learn about the new legislators and administration. There are 33 Freshman members in the House and 11 in the Senate. We have many new faces at the Statehouse, veteran legislators returning to Capitol Square and many members switching chambers.

In addition, newly-elected Gov. Mike DeWine will be introducing his first two-year biennial state budget proposal in mid-March. This will be an extremely important time as the OLC and its member libraries continue their advocacy efforts to restore state funding for public libraries through the Public Library Fund (PLF).

To prepare library directors, fiscal officers and trustees to work with the members of the new General Assembly, the OLC will be hosting a free webinar on Thurs., Jan. 31 at 1:00 p.m. Michelle Francis, OLC Director of Government and Legal Services, will cover in detail effective advocacy tools and techniques for developing relationships with legislators as well as the latest information from the Statehouse. She will cover everything you need to know to be “In the Know.”

Overview: 

The conference will feature programs and experiences intended to improve Ohio’s library workforce, facilitate partnerships, and support initiatives that improve the capacity of librarians and library staff to improve their knowledge and skills. Conference participants will have opportunities to network with other library staffs outside of their usual networks, learn what other types of libraries are doing, and explore mutual benefits across different types of libraries. They will discover what other types of libraries can do for and with them, learn to be thoughtful of other library types in developing new ideas, and find inspiration for new and innovative ways to support fellow library staff around the state.

Patrons love their libraries, but they aren’t interested in why one type of library is different from the others. What is the experience for libraries who “inherit” patrons from one another? Students outgrow K-12 libraries, become independent patrons of academic and public libraries, and eventually start the cycle all over again with their own families. Can we be intentional about handing off patrons, and even sharing patrons?

The conference is designed for ‘decision makers’ with responsibilities for overseeing all facilities systems, from buildings to landscaping, roofing to plumbing, renovations to new construction, space planning to furniture, and of course funding. This conference is intended to help public libraries “Build a Better Library” for all of our patrons!
