Reaching out to legislators can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. Through tools, training, and education, the OLC is committed to providing you with information and resources to help you become an effective advocate for public libraries. This session will focus on everything library directors need to know about advocating on behalf of their library and working with members of Ohio’s General Assembly.

The training will include tips for engaging with legislators about policy and funding needs as well as tools and resources that are available. You will leave this session with a better understanding of how legislative action works, how to add to the conversations, and the confidence to speak up for Ohio’s public libraries. Wearing Different Hats: The 2018 Technical Services Retreat @ Nationwide Hotel & Conference Center

Learn, share, and network with other technical services specialists in a relaxed campus environment at the Nationwide Hotel & Conference Center in  Lewis Center, Ohio (North Columbus). The 2018 Technical Services Retreat will be held March 28-29. Follow the conversation now on Twitter using #OLCTS.

Technical Services is not a singular job. There are many different roles and tasks to perform including issues surrounding intellectual freedom, diversity, adaptability and resourcefulness. Join your colleagues for the biennial 2018 Technical Services Retreat, an educational event that strikes the perfect balance between the big picture and focused, practical topics. The Retreat’s theme this year is “Wearing Many Hats,” and we are excited to take a closer look at the many roles technical services staff perform behind-the-scenes. This two-day event draws technical services specialists from libraries and related organizations to learn, share, and network in a relaxed and productive campus environment.

Continuing Education Credits:
For those working toward their Ohio Public Librarian or Ohio Public Library Staff re-certification, this workshop counts as 6 contact hours each day (12 for the entire retreat).

Hotel Accommodations: A room block has been reserved at the Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center (PH: 614-880-4300). Please indicate that you are with the OLC’s Technical Services Retreat when reserving your room.  The OLC room rate is $95/night (plus state and local taxes). Reservations must be made by March 6, 2018.

Symposium Overview:
Opioid and heroin abuse has become a public health crisis across the United States and Ohio’s public libraries are not immune from this crisis. This event is designed to help you understand the opioid epidemic and the challenges facing public libraries from a management perspective with an emphasis on keeping library staff and patrons safe. You’ll learn from the experts who are on the front lines of this fight including representatives from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, law enforcement, first responders, attorneys as well as environmental health and public health specialists.

Topics include:

  • The heroin and opioid abuse problem in Ohio and its impact on communities
  • Liability and policy considerations for employers
  • Proper procedures and protocols for cleaning-up unknown substances
  • Resources and tools available to public libraries
  • Community engagement strategies
