Overview:

Pricey commercial databases can be out of reach for many libraries, especially as our budgets shrink. How can we provide our patrons with quality information if we can’t afford these costs? This webinar will highlight a number of free online resources that anyone can access, and that can replace some or all of the functionality of familiar commercial databases.

Learning Objectives:

  • You will learn more about free online resources that are applicable to a variety of queries received while working the library desk.
  • Topics covered include Readers’ Advisory, Literary Criticism, History and Geography, Science, Careers and Self Education, Reading and Writing, Health, Genealogy, and Consumer Resources.
  • You will gain a better understanding of the resources available that can help with starting a search when you are unfamiliar with a particular topic.

About the Presenters:

Megan Sheeran is a reference librarian at the Upper Arlington Public Library. She currently serves as the Assistant Coordinator of OLC’s Reference and Information Services Division. She enjoys tricky research questions, presenting on patron privacy, and helping patrons learn how to use the latest technology.

Jen Downing is the outreach librarian at the Upper Arlington Public Library. She has been actively involved with OLC’s Reference and Information Division since 2010 and has presented a variety of programs and webinars during that time. Her professional interests include readers’ advisory, adult programming, service to seniors and information literacy.

Intended Audience:  Library staff members who are involved with reference work.

Description and Overview: Accessing databases, downloading ebooks, finding lexicon levels: libraries teach adults how to do things every single day. This workshop will teach library staff the basics of how adults learn and specific ways to help different types of learners.

Continuing Education Credits: For those working toward their Ohio Public Librarian or Ohio Public Library Staff re-certification, this workshop counts as six (6) contact hours.

Presenters: Donna Albanese, State Director, Aspire Adult Readiness Education at the Ohio Department of Higher Education; Michelle Francis, Director of Government and Legal Services, Ohio Library Council

The Ohio Department of Higher Education’s Aspire program, formerly the Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) program, helps adults build the skills they need to become employed or pursue higher education or training. Aspire serves Ohioans who have less than a 12th-grade education or the equivalent and who are beyond age 18.

Workforce development/adult education programs and services are a priority for Ohio’s public libraries as we continue to provide lifelong learning opportunities and position our libraries as continuous learning centers. This webinar will provide basic information to Ohio’s public libraries on Ohio’s Aspire program, how more libraries can participate and general information on the federal grant program.

Ohio’s Aspire programs provide FREE services for individuals who need assistance acquiring the skills to be successful in post-secondary education and training, and employment. Local programs offer classes at flexible locations, and on different days and times to meet diverse needs. All students are required to attend orientation, where an assessment is given to help determine the individual’s educational needs and goals.

Services available at programs throughout all 88 Ohio counties include:

  • Basic math, reading and writing skills
  • Adult Secondary Education/High School Equivalency Exam Preparation
  • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
  • Transition services – including employment and post-secondary
  • Life skills, employability skills and computer literacy
  • Family Literacy – enriching the parental role of adult learners
  • Workplace Literacy – education services offered in collaboration with business, industry, government and/or labor to increase the productivity of the workforce through improved literacy skills
  • Corrections Education – a partnership with a jail, detention center, community-based rehabilitation center or other similar institution
  • Distance Education

Ohio’s Adult Diploma Program: Changes to GED/High School Equivalency Exam Webinar

Overview: According to the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation, there are more than 790,000 Ohioans without a high school diploma or the equivalent. State law changed recently to broaden the testing options for Ohioans seeking the equivalent of a high school diploma. Now, there are other options in addition to the GED. In 2017, the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) approved the following testing assessment companies: GED, HiSET and TASC. Under the new law, the Ohio High School Equivalence Diploma will be recognized as the Ohio Certificate of High School Equivalence.

Adult education programs and workforce development services are a priority for Ohio’s public libraries as we continue to provide lifelong learning opportunities and position our libraries as continuous learning centers. This webinar will provide basic information to Ohio’s public libraries on the changes to Ohio’s Adult Diploma Program and how libraries can assist their patrons in this area.

Objectives: During this webinar, you will learn:

  • more about the changes to Ohio’s Adult Diploma Program.
  • how to explain the certificates and tests that are available and recognized by the state.
  • how to help patrons who need to obtain their Ohio Certificate of High School Equivalence.
