Presenter: Charlie Hansen, Public Services Manager, Columbus Metropolitan Library     

In 2016, Columbus Metropolitan Library developed and implemented a “Customer First” approach to customer service. Staff across the system were trained on the new “Customer First” philosophy, focusing on gray area scenarios where the correct response to a customer’s request is not apparent.

Gain a better understanding of what goes into creating a consistent, customer-focused culture of service by utilizing the latest knowledge and expertise from the Customer Experience industry. You will learn how to easily incorporate “Customer First” values and behaviors at your library regardless of its size.

Presenter: Miriam Matteson, PhD, Associate Professor, Kent State University-SLIS

Teams are a common organizational structure in public services units in libraries. But just calling a group of employees a “team” doesn’t mean that they will always function as a high performing, service-oriented team. Learn more about what it means to be a public service team and brainstorm characteristics of the ideal team situation. You will come away from this session with strategies on how to work toward that ideal by developing relationships with team members, clarifying roles and responsibilities, and developing interpersonal skills to be able to repair situations when needed.

Social Media Etiquette and Customer Service

Presenter: Mandy Knapp, Digital Resources Manager, OPLIN (Ohio Public Library Information Network)

Navigating the world of social media can be tricky. Are there lines that shouldn’t be crossed? Should there be restrictions put on staff for what they can or can’t post? What if your co-worker is posting inflammatory comments? This session will discuss where the lines should be and ways to deal with various issues. In a hands-on exercise, participants will share resources and tips with one another.

Overdose Assistance and Your Patrons

Presenter: Nate Smith, Sergeant, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office

This presentation will be a brief overview on the HOPE Task Force (Franklin County Sheriff’s Office – Heroin Overdose Prevention and Education) dedicated to linking survivors of overdose with treatment, healthcare, and recovery services. The HOPE Task Force also investigates dealers who are responsible for fatal and non-fatal overdose events and prosecutes the individuals responsible to the fullest extent of the law. You will learn more about the legalities associated with responding to an overdose, how to recognize an overdose victim, steps you can take to assist the victim while waiting for EMS to arrive, and measures that can be taken to help prevent drug use on the library’s property.

Often we are aware of the ways in which we can most effectively serve and work with diverse individuals, but we aren’t always aware of the ways in which our unconscious biases interfere. During this session, you will explore the phenomena of unconscious bias and how libraries can minimize its effects on patron and colleague relations.

The safety of patrons and staff is a top priority for all libraries, with library directors and managers striving to maintain a welcoming and secure environment for all who wish to make use of the space. To address safety and security concerns, it is common for public libraries to work with local law enforcement or to hire some combination of professional security guards or off-duty police officers. During this webinar, you will gain a better understanding of the role and responsibilities of security personnel and what to look out for if you to choose to contract with a security guard company.

The Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Private Investigator Security Guard Services (PISGS) licenses and regulates companies that provide security services and promotes public safety by verifying companies are insured and operated by people with appropriate experience and training.

Pricey commercial databases can be out of reach for many libraries, especially as our budgets shrink. How can we provide our patrons with quality information if we can’t afford these costs? This webinar will highlight a number of free online resources that anyone can access, and that can replace some or all of the functionality of familiar commercial databases.

  • You will learn more about free online resources that are applicable to a variety of queries received while working the library desk.

About the Presenters:

Megan Sheeran is a reference librarian at the Upper Arlington Public Library. She currently serves as the Assistant Coordinator of OLC’s Reference and Information Services Division. She enjoys tricky research questions, presenting on patron privacy, and helping patrons learn how to use the latest technology.

Jen Downing is the outreach librarian at the Upper Arlington Public Library. She has been actively involved with OLC’s Reference and Information Division since 2010 and has presented a variety of programs and webinars during that time. Her professional interests include readers’ advisory, adult programming, service to seniors and information literacy.

Intended Audience:  Library staff members who are involved with reference work.

Presenters: Donna Albanese, State Director, Aspire Adult Readiness Education at the Ohio Department of Higher Education; Michelle Francis, Director of Government and Legal Services, Ohio Library Council

The Ohio Department of Higher Education’s Aspire program, formerly the Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) program, helps adults build the skills they need to become employed or pursue higher education or training. Aspire serves Ohioans who have less than a 12th-grade education or the equivalent and who are beyond age 18.

Workforce development/adult education programs and services are a priority for Ohio’s public libraries as we continue to provide lifelong learning opportunities and position our libraries as continuous learning centers. This webinar will provide basic information to Ohio’s public libraries on Ohio’s Aspire program, how more libraries can participate and general information on the federal grant program.

Ohio’s Aspire programs provide FREE services for individuals who need assistance acquiring the skills to be successful in post-secondary education and training, and employment. Local programs offer classes at flexible locations, and on different days and times to meet diverse needs. All students are required to attend orientation, where an assessment is given to help determine the individual’s educational needs and goals.

Services available at programs throughout all 88 Ohio counties include:

  • Basic math, reading and writing skills
  • Adult Secondary Education/High School Equivalency Exam Preparation
  • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
  • Transition services – including employment and post-secondary
  • Life skills, employability skills and computer literacy
  • Family Literacy – enriching the parental role of adult learners
  • Workplace Literacy – education services offered in collaboration with business, industry, government and/or labor to increase the productivity of the workforce through improved literacy skills
  • Corrections Education – a partnership with a jail, detention center, community-based rehabilitation center or other similar institution
  • Distance Education
