July 17, 2023 — The OLC was honored to attend the presentation ceremony led by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden at the White House today for the Toledo Lucas County Public Library. The library was one of just four nationwide to receive the 2023 National Medal for Museum and Library Service from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The National Medal is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries that demonstrate excellence in service to their communities.

Since 1994, the award has honored more than 200 institutions that exemplify extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service. Over the past 29 years, the award has celebrated institutions that are making a difference for individuals, families, and communities.

Selected from 30 national finalists, the 2023 National Medal for Museum and Library Service winners represent institutions that provide dynamic programming and services that exceed expected levels of service. Through their community outreach, these institutions bring about change that touches the lives of individuals and helps communities thrive.

A recording of the ceremony is available on the White House YouTube channel. To learn more about the museums and libraries who have previously been selected to receive a National Medal, visit imls.gov.
