OLC Hosts Stress First Aid Webinar

Working with the public on a daily basis can be draining. People might think of libraries as calm and gentle, but we know that library work can be stressful at times. Most of you have probably had at least one experience that broke your heart, wore you out, or left you feeling exasperated. This May, in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, the OLC is partnering with the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) to help you identify and address problems associated with various levels of stress. The OLC’s Stress First Aid Webinar will be held Tues., May 9 from 1-2 p.m.

Stress First Aid is a proven framework to improve recovery from stress reactions — in oneself, coworkers and customers. It was first created by the United States Navy, but has been adapted for use by other professions and can be used by the public, too. In stressful work environments, the value of reducing the impact of stress translates into a stronger workforce, less turnover and more productivity. Stress First Aid is a model that can be applied to any stressor and used with any person.

During the webinar, Dr. Vicki Montesano, Bureau Chief of Mental Health Treatment with OhioMHAS will discuss the “7 Cs of Stress First Aid” and how to assist someone who may be experiencing a stressful situation or event. You’ll also learn how to monitor your stress level and move from unhealthy reactions to healthier ones. The member fee is $35 for this webinar (Non-member fee: $70). The deadline to register is May 2. More information is available on the OLC website.
