OLC Hosts Powerful Discussion on Race Relations

Even in a virtual format, Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely were able to connect with OLC members and discuss the emotionally charged issue of racism in an authentic and straight-forward way. They are pictured here with OLC’s Executive Director Michelle Francis.

On August 6, the OLC hosted a powerful and engaging conversation with All American Boys authors Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely on how to advance racial equity within public libraries. This webinar provided a unique perspective on the difficult topics of racism, power, identity, and oppression, and how they impact public library staff, services, programs, and collections. This was a direct and honest discussion about why it is so critical for libraries to focus on race to improve equitable outcomes for everyone.

If you were unable to participate in the live event, an archived version of this webinar is now available for purchase on the OLC website.

Please note: This is not the end of the discussion, but rather just the beginning. The OLC is dedicated to ongoing learning, action, and engagement and will host more webinars like this one soon. The next event will be on Thurs., Nov. 19.

OLC will host Addressing Race in Public Libraries Workshop with the Kirwan Institute at The Ohio State University. Please check the OLC calendar for details.

In addition, more videos, reading lists, and podcasts are listed on the OLC website at olc.org/racial-equity.
