The transition to a new management role can be challenging even for experienced and highly- skilled employees. The OLC’s New Directors Workshop Series is designed specifically for new and aspiring library directors who want to develop their management skills, confidence and effectiveness. This program is delivered through four, one-day workshops held each month over the summer (May-August).
The OLC’s New Directors Workshop Series will cover the core principles, techniques and approaches that you can apply to any situation that you’ll face as a new library director. You’ll learn how to handle management challenges with ease, including how to establish credibility and authority fast, how to motivate employees, work with your Board of Trustees, keep your library budget on track, handle legal issues, and much more. This comprehensive leadership training will cover proven management techniques and powerful strategies for success in your new role.

9:45 am – 10:45 am | The Board of Trustees and Library Finances
Learn how to keep your Board involved in your library’s financial issues. This session will show you how to demystify the process for your board members.
Presenter: John Yesso, Vice President of the Board of Trustees, Upper Arlington Public Library. Trustees play an integral role in a public library. John is an active board member who is able to explain financial and business aspects in concise and understandable terms. He is a frequent speaker at OLC’s trustee events and has years of experience with financial matters including budgeting and library funding. John knows how to inform and engage board members and get them fully vested in the success of the library.
11:00 am – Noon | Keeping Your Library Budget on Track
This session will take you through each step of the budget process throughout the year. You will receive practical information about forecasting expenditures and revenues, creating a “working” budget, and tracking the budget monthly. You will also get tips on how to work effectively with your fiscal officer, as fostering this unique relationship is vital to the budget process.

12:45 – 1:45 p.m. | Managing Your Library Building
Every library director is eventually faced with some unexpected building challenges. Regardless of your library’s size, major facility issues often end up on the director’s desk. This session will cover best practices and valuable tips on a variety of topics including maintenance, repairs, service contracts, housekeeping, emergency preparedness, and planning. You will learn how to keep your building open, safe, and welcoming.
Presenter: Ryan McDonnell, Director, Grandview Heights Public Library
2:00 – 3:30 p.m.| Public Records Act and the Open Meetings Act
This session will provide an overview of best practices for public records management and disposal for public libraries in Ohio. It will cover exemptions to the Public Records Act and how they specifically apply to libraries. You will also learn more about the Open Meetings Act and what library directors must know about the law. This session will close with a question and answer session.

3:30 – 4:30 p.m. | Ohio Ethics Law: Can I Do That?
This session will provide timely information regarding the Ohio Ethics Commission, restrictions in the Ohio Ethics Law, and related statutes that pertain to all public sector employees and private sectors parties who are regulated or do business with public offices.
Session objectives include:
- Understand how to identify and avoid acting on potential conflicts of interest.
- Understand definition of public contracts and ethics prohibitions related to public contracts.
- Identify potential post-employment requirements.
- Learn about general assistance available from the Ohio Ethics Commission to understand and comply with the Ethics Law and related statutes.

Who Should Attend: Library directors with less than three years of experience as a director, interim or acting directors, or library staff with management and/or administrative experience those who aspire to become a library director.

- A copy of the OLC publication, Ohio Public Library Administrator’s Handbook, will be emailed to workshop attendees following the workshop.
Continuing Education Credits: For those working toward their Ohio Public Librarian or Ohio Public Library Staff re-certification, this workshop counts as six contact hours.
