The OLC is adapting its in-person programming to an online format to meet our members’ needs. The New Director’s Workshop series will be offered completely online. This approach will allow us to bring this important information directly to new and aspiring library directors.

Overview:
The transition to a new management role can be challenging even for experienced and highly-skilled employees. For over twenty years now, the OLC’s New Directors Workshop Series has been designed specifically for new and aspiring library directors who want to develop their management skills, confidence and effectiveness. This program is delivered through four VIRTUAL workshops; each focusing on a specific area of education.

The OLC’s New Directors Workshop Series will cover the core principles, techniques and approaches that you can apply to any situation that you’ll face as a new library director. You’ll learn how to handle management challenges with ease, including how to establish credibility and authority fast, how to motivate employees, work with your Board of Trustees, keep your library budget on track, handle legal issues and much more. This comprehensive leadership training will cover proven management techniques and powerful strategies for success in the multiple facets of your new role.

This workshop series includes intensive work with everyone from OLC staff and legal counsel to seasoned directors and subject experts in various library fields to other “first-timers” just like you. It is designed to align you with other library professionals who aspire to gain the skills and education to be a leader in Ohio’s libraries. Many of the connections made will become lasting friendships throughout your career.

Who Should Attend: Library directors with less than three years of experience as a director, interim or acting directors, or library staff with management and/or administrative experience who aspire to become a library director.

What’s Included:

  • All handouts provided by the instructors (Electronic version).
  • A copy of the OLC publication, Ohio Public Library Administrator’s Handbook, will be emailed to workshop attendees following the first workshop. (If you registered for the entire series, you received this prior to the first workshop on June 4.

Continuing Education Credits: For those working toward their Ohio Public Librarian or Ohio Public Library Staff re-certification, this workshop series counts as 24 contact hours (six contact hours per workshop).

9:30 a.m.  | Welcome and Introductions

9:35 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. | Staying Legal: Good Advice on Human Resource Matters

When it comes to administering human resources, library directors have a dual role. They have to be aware of the legalities of HR management, but they also have to bring a “human” side to human resources as well. This session will cover basic HR issues and provide practical information about potential danger zones in the area of HR management. This session will focus on the practical aspect of HR management including legal compliance.

Presenter: Benjamin A. Shepler, Partner, Labor and Employment Group, Vorys, Sater, Seymour, and Pease. Ben defends clients in federal and state court litigation arising from employment discrimination laws and counsels clients on issues pertaining to employee handbooks, reductions-in-force, terminations, employment agreements, severance agreements, and all other aspects of the employer-employee relationship.

12:15 – 1:15 p.m. | The Importance of Diversity in Public Libraries

The OLC Diversity Awareness and Resources Committee is charged with recommending ways OLC can address diversity as it relates to the library profession in general and to the Ohio library community. Aspects of diversity include but are not limited to age, disability, gender, religion, sexual orientation and ethnicity. It is vital that the culture of the library be inclusive and sensitive to all diversity issues. It all begins with you!

Presenter: Kacie Armstrong, Director, Euclid Public Library and Past Chair of the OLC’s Board of Directors; Andrew Mangels, Director, Westlake Porter Public Library

1:30 – 1:45 p.m.   | Ohio Public Library Core Competencies and OLC’s Certification Programs – an Update from OLC’s Professional Development Committee

The OLC Professional Development Committee is charged with reviewing and updating the Ohio Public Library Core Competencies. Learn why these competencies are so important to libraries that strive for excellence and how you can incorporate them into your library and your career – and the careers of your staff. You will also hear about OLC’s two certification programs that the PDC oversees.

Presenter: Gillian Nance, Adult and Informational and Inter Library Loan Services Librarian,   Southwest Public Libraries (Grove City, OH) and Assistant Chair of OLC’s Professional Development Committee

2:00 – 3:00 p.m. | The Nuts and Bolts of Leadership: Personnel Management Tools and Ideas

Learn the ‘nuts and bolts’ of human resources and personnel management. This session will give real-world advice and provide templates to help you hire, manage, promote, and discipline staff.

Presenter: Karen E. Miller, M.L.S., Managing Consultant, Bradbury Miller Associates

Prior to her glamorous life as a consultant, Karen was a career librarian in Ohio and has managed people more than she has done anything else, ever. Karen is a member of OLC’s Professional Development Committee.

3:15 -4:15 p.m. | Practical HR: Making it Work in Your Library

This presentation will focus on the practical aspects of HR management, including legal compliance, from the perspective of an administrative leader who motivates, coaches, and encourages staff to perform at optimal levels.

Presenter: Andrew Mangels, Director, Westlake Porter Public Library, for more than 14 years. He spent three years overseeing Human Resources operations at his library due to a hiring freeze. Andrew has been very active in OLC, serving as Chair of the Professional Development Committee, making presentations at conferences and workshops, and served on the OLC’s Board of Directors. He Chaired the Board in 2017. He has over 20 years of experience in libraries and has learned one thing: just when you think you have seen it all…
