The OLC is adapting its in-person programming to an online format to meet our members’ needs. The New Director’s Workshop series will be offered completely online. This approach will allow us to bring this important information directly to new and aspiring library directors.

The transition to a new management role can be challenging even for experienced and highly-skilled employees. For over twenty years now, the OLC’s New Directors Workshop Series has been designed specifically for new and aspiring library directors who want to develop their management skills, confidence and effectiveness. This program is delivered through four VIRTUAL workshops—each focusing on a specific area of education.

The OLC’s New Directors Workshop Series will cover the core principles, techniques and approaches that you can apply to any situation that you’ll face as a new library director. You’ll learn how to handle management challenges with ease, including how to establish credibility and authority fast, how to motivate employees, work with your Board of Trustees, keep your library budget on track, handle legal issues and much more. This comprehensive leadership training will cover proven management techniques and powerful strategies for success in the multiple facets of your new role.

This workshop series includes intensive work with everyone from OLC staff and legal counsel to seasoned directors and subject experts in various library fields to other “first-timers” just like you. It is designed to connect you with other library professionals who aspire to gain the skills and education to be a leader in Ohio’s libraries. Many of the connections made will become lasting friendships throughout your career.

Who Should Attend: Library directors with less than three years of experience as a director, interim or acting directors, or library staff with management and/or administrative experience who aspire to become a library director.

What’s Included:

  • Electronic handouts provided by the instructors.
  • A copy of the OLC publication, Ohio Public Library Administrator’s Handbook, will be emailed to workshop attendees following the first workshop.

Continuing Education Credits: For those working toward their Ohio Public Librarian or Ohio Public Library Staff re-certification, this workshop series counts as 24 contact hours (six contact hours per workshop).

9:30 a.m. | Welcome and Introductions

9:45 – 10:45 a.m. | Welcome / Ohio’s Public Library Community
Michelle Francis, Executive Director, Ohio Library Council, will welcome Ohio’s newest library directors and aspiring directors to the workshop with an overview the OLC’s services and an introduction to the benefits of OLC membership.

Evan Struble, Associate State Librarian for Library Development, and Don Yarman, Director, Ohio Public Library Information Network, will each give a brief overview of how their respective organizations interact with Ohio’s public libraries as well as explain how they collaborate with the OLC on projects and services for public libraries.

11:00 a.m. – Noon | So You’ve Decided to be a Director!
How do you make the transition from library staff member to director? Tony Howard, Director, Pickerington Public Library, will share details about his transition to the role of library director. He will cover a library director’s major areas of responsibility including board, staff, and community relations as well as handling the library’s finances, services and operations.

Presenter: Tony Howard, MLIS, CPL, Director, Pickerington Public Library

Tony has been working in public libraries for more than 15 years, starting as a clerk at the Upper Arlington Public Library. As Director of the Pickerington Public Library, Tony leads the organization’s vision and purpose, fosters effective leadership through innovation management, and develops a team focused on being organizationally agile. Tony’s previous executive leadership experience comes from his role as Public Services Director at Columbus Metropolitan Library.  He has leadership experience in managing Boards and serving on Boards. Additionally, Tony’s professional experience includes public speaking, developing programming for conferences and workshops, and community planning. Tony has been active in the OLC since first joining the profession. He has served on the Management and Administration Division, Development Committee, Library Education Committee (Chair in 2012), 2013 Convention Program Committee, 2014 Program Committee Chair, 2015 Convention Chair and is a member of the OLC Legislative Network.  Tony also serves as a member of the SERLS Board and is an active member of an ALA veteran’s work group creating education for libraries serving veteran communities.

Gain a better understanding of the legal questions, government regulations, and legal requirements that affect both day-to-day and long-term operations of your library.

3:00 – 3:45 p.m. | Under the Rotunda: The History of Public Library Advocacy at the Statehouse, Current Legislative Issues, and Why it Matters
This session will look back at the history of library funding, Internet access, and local funding as well as current issues in the Ohio General Assembly. We will also discuss why politics is not a spectator sport and how and why to get involved.

A new library director’s reflections on her first year of ruthless weeding, renovations, and “roughing it” in a small library. Amee was a participant in the 2019 New Director Workshop Series. We look forward to hearing about her first year after taking the course!
