Program Overview: Ohio’s public libraries are known for having outstanding storytime programs for children of all ages, but these traditional storytimes aren’t always a good fit for children with special needs. Adapted storytimes are programs that are modified to accommodate kids with developmental disabilities or sensory integration issues. Would you like to start an adapted storytime at your library? Don’t know where to start? Rebecca Shook, Special Needs Resources Librarian, Westlake Porter Public Library, will outline specific steps to take in setting up an adapted storytime at your library.

Learning Objectives:
You’ll learn how to:

  1. plan successful storytimes for children with special needs
  2. structure an adapted storytime program
  3. recruit parents, caregivers and children
  4. choose the right books
  5. captivate your special needs audience

Intended Audience: Children’s librarians and library staff who with no background in special needs programming.
