OLC Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of the Small Libraries Division is to represent the interests of and provide a forum for administrators, staff members, and trustees of small libraries on issues of particular concern to small libraries in Ohio.

A small library as defined by the Small Libraries Division includes but is not limited to libraries that meet the following criteria – (revised 11/04)
•  An operating budget under $1,000,000.
•  A service population of less than 20,000.

Unit Objectives

In addition to the goals and objectives in the Ohio Library Council Long-Range Plan,

1. To create a support network for new directors of small libraries.

a. Members of the division will contact new directors in their region to provide them with a “mentor”.
b. The network will be established within the first two months of 2009.

2. To promote and encourage active involvement of the Small Libraries Division membership.

a. Creation of a monthly blog to replace the bi-annual newsletter.

i. Will include timely topics and will feature small libraries and their best practices.

ii. Promotion of the blog will be broadcast on the Small Libraries listserv, the Fall newsletter, and postcards to small library administration.

b. The blog will be launched in January 2009 allowing readers to actively participate immediately.

3. To provide programming for members in the upcoming 2009 Convention.

a. “New and Improved Textbook of What I didn't learn in Library School ”.

i. Program features networking within the community and administration tactics.

b. “Bookstore vs. Libraries: Reworking your Library to Include Common Areas:

i. Program includes what to add to your library without major renovations to bring more space and an appealing social atmosphere.

c. “Board Development Beyond the Book”

i. Program teaches how to find a qualified library board, the details of board responsibilities and general board development/orientation.

d. “Surviving on the Front Lines: A Day in Small Library”

i. Program details the minimum knowledge one needs to know to function in a library without prior knowledge or degrees.
